Landing On Ice

Synopsis

Wing Yee leaves Hong Kong for advanced figure-skating training in Toronto, hoping to compete internationally. Encouragement from her coach and the welcome offered by her roommate Christy help her adjust to an unfamiliar place. As the demands of training increase, progress becomes less certain and comparison with other skaters undermines her confidence. Christy's support acquires greater emotional importance during that uncertainty, gradually becoming the center of a different kind of attachment. The romance follows ambition and belonging together, allowing a sporting goal to coexist with needs that achievement cannot entirely satisfy. Wing Yee must consider what it means to continue when success is not assured, while also finding words for feelings that have developed inside the companionship helping her endure the challenge.
