DisobedienceReturning to the religious community she left behind, a woman encounters the childhood friend whose attraction once made her an outsider.
Returning to the religious community she left behind, a woman encounters the childhood friend whose attraction once made her an outsider. The homecoming revives emotions that have never entirely disappeared. Familiar people, expectations and rituals surround the women, but their renewed connection brings the boundaries of acceptable behaviour into sharp focus. Their relationship becomes a question of how to live honestly while still understanding the power of faith, family and shared history. Sebastián Lelio’s drama follows the consequences of a passion that cannot simply be consigned to the past. Adapted from Naomi Alderman’s novel, it places the women’s reunion at the centre of a conflict between belonging to a community and finding the freedom to choose one’s own life.
