While trying to work out how to return it, she activates the machine and discovers a companion whose appearance and behavior closely match the woman she might have imagined for herself. Naming the robot Ai, Gen decides to keep her rather than restore the previous shape of her life. The romantic science-fiction premise follows companionship across the boundary between human desire and artificial responsiveness. A partner who appears ideally suited to someone raises questions that ordinary attraction does not answer: what makes an interaction mutual, what can be chosen freely, and how a person should understand feelings produced by a relationship whose terms she does not fully know.
